On tour with the mobile disco in the 1980s - today a multi-entrepreneur in the event industry

Spotlights, loudspeakers, a handful of cables and creativity. It didn't take much more for two guys to lay the foundations for their group of companies with event technology for trade fairs and events (yes, a real garage story!). It all started with a mobile disco - we're talking about the mid-1980s. Tom Koperek and his friend, now his long-standing business partner Sven Robusch, used it to create an atmosphere in and around the Ruhr area after school. It was worth it: "For us at just 18 years old, we were already earning quite well," says Koperek. It gave them such a boost that they decided to train as lighting and stage technicians and go on tour with theater and show productions.

Grand Hall ZOLLVEREIN flagship

The first entry of her own company in the commercial register followed in 1995, from which LK Aktiengesellschaft initially emerged. Today, the former AG has become "LK Management und Beteiligungs GmbH", a holding company with a group of subsidiaries and holdings and more than 100 employees.

A flagship of the LK Group: the historic compressor hall at the Zollverein coking plant in Essen, which Koperek and other investors took over in 2014 when it was in dire need of renovation and had it converted into a top-class event location. "A mammoth project," says the father of one son, looking back, "which took four years." 1,800 tons of steel alone had to be dismantled. But it didn't stop there. He regularly checks to see what could be optimized and invests time and money in equipment, technology, furniture and logistics. "The better and more comprehensively the building is set up, the smoother the events run," emphasizes Koperek, who studied at the Executive School of the University of St. Gallen.

Thinking strategically - just as important as empathy and appreciation

The 56-year-old thinks strategically through and through: detailed solutions are developed to relieve companies that have considered an event in their day-to-day business. His team at the Grand Hall assists marketing departments with the organization, finds hotels, coordinates all trades - in short, the entire event is planned and supported, from the initial idea onwards.

"Our customers can rely on the processes to work, which saves them a lot of time and stress." For him, however, the basis for good cooperation always remains "mutual appreciation, empathy and trust." His success proves him right. Well-known companies such as E.ON, RWE and Evonik based in the Ruhr region as well as medium-sized companies throughout Germany choose the Grand Hall ZOLLVEREIN as their event location - and place the planning and implementation of their event in the hands of the experienced professionals from Essen.
