Thrown in at the deep end with pleasure: Laurence Böcker immediately feels at home in the Grand Hall team

The first three months are over, one event has followed the next and Laurence Böcker still hasn't seen much of Zollverein. Of course, he has seen the coking plant and its surroundings - after all, his workplace is the Grand Hall. Is this what he had in mind when he came across the advertised position of event manager late last summer? "Yes, I did, because that's the way it is in the event industry - just do it," says the 25-year-old, who has a wealth of experience from various positions, including the Schalke Arena in Gelsenkirchen, where he managed sporting events and major concerts.

"Simply a super nice welcome!"

Event specialists can now choose their jobs. Laurence explains why he chose the Grand Hall with a good feeling. When he met Managing Director Gary Pott and the team, it was clear that he had found his personal dream job. "I was simply made to feel very welcome here." He was also impressed by the concept. The latest technology, permanent partner companies and the modern and cool equipment in the hall. The flexible working hours - sometimes at the weekend, but days off during the week, later shifts, but sleeping longer in the mornings - were also exactly what he was looking for. "A pure office and desk job? Really not!" Perhaps this is also because he likes to party and is also a "proven carnival fan". He has always felt a little closer to the Rhineland than the Ruhr area. That could change now at the latest. For January, Laurence has set his sights on the Ruhr Museum, the sculpture park and the two slag heaps at Zollverein.

Innovative solutions, products and services in the service industry: annual KVD Service Congress once again invites members to the Grand Hall

For the second time in a row, the KVD service association welcomed its members to the ZOLLVEREIN Grand Hall. And once again, the association is so impressed with our event location that it has booked it again for 2024. The congress with accompanying trade fair offered innovative keynote speeches and specialist sequences from November 8 to 9. The central theme behind it all: the latest solutions, products and services in the service industry.

Accompanying trade exhibition is one of the leading of its kind

The numerous exhibitors were also enthusiastic about this special setting in the former industrial hall at Zollverein, and the range was huge: for example, the company Parat Solutions GmbH from Waldkirchen, which founded its success in 1946 with tool cases and now offers case systems for the management of modern learning materials, among other things. Or Osapiens Service GmbH, which was launched in 2018 and presented AI and automation technologies in the Grand Hall, for example to ensure compliance with ESG laws. As diverse as the exhibitors were, the enjoyment of the exchange and, not least, the guided tour at the end of the first day of the event - of course, it was through the coking plant and the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex.

If you want to organize events, trade fairs and congresses successfully, everything has to be just right!

The Grand Hall stands for high-class events and has made a name for itself in the B2B sector throughout Germany. During the summer break, extensive investments have now been made in technology, furniture and equipment with the aim of once again increasing the attractiveness of the event location. "In this way, we are meeting the wishes and needs of our customers, who not only want a unique atmosphere and a high degree of sustainability for their events, but also optimal equipment," says Managing Director Gerald Pott.

The result is something to be seen and heard: The completely refurbished meeting rooms in the Schalthaus shine in a new color and lighting concept, and at the same time the in-house furniture pool was expanded to include matching conference furniture. The permanently installed event technology was also brought up to date. The focus here was on sustainability, energy efficiency and perfecting the existing installation. The sound system, for example, is based on a sophisticated simulation concept. The 40 new loudspeakers guarantee excellent acoustics with maximum speech intelligibility.

More than just a side effect: With the high-end modernization as well as the complete conversion to LED lighting, energy costs are now saved by up to 75%. Regional suppliers, a modern district heating system and the supply of 100 percent green electricity, including for the 10 newly installed fast charging points in front of the hall, come on top.

Familiar with event management from the ground up:

Whenever possible, Philipp Goschau is "out on the pitch with my team FC Stoppenberg" on Mondays. The event manager takes the time. And he needs the time, because his job often keeps him busy in the evenings and on weekends. His job begins the moment the customer signs the contract with the Grand Hall, and extends from staff appointments and coordination of the trades involved to operational signage and branding.

Traveled the world and further specialized

Philipp Goschau is familiar with events from the ground up. As a trained chef and hotel specialist, he traveled the seas of this world on cruise ships and then worked in the USA as an F&B management trainee. For those who don't know the abbreviation, it stands for Food and Beverage, the largest sector in the hotel and restaurant industry. What followed was distance learning to become a hotel business administrator and finally event management at the Colosseum in Essen and the Metronom Theater in Oberhausen.

Back to the roots in Essen-Stoppenberg

He has now been contributing his experience to the Grand Hall's operations for two years - the decisive step forward for him. "Planning is everything," he says, "that works particularly well here." On the one hand, the Grand Hall's customer base consistently includes large companies and corporations, and on the other, "we have fixed catering and technical partners on whom we can rely 100% at all times." This is of elementary importance for the event manager, because he is also responsible for the complete and meticulously timed processes. And this applies to the set-up and dismantling as well as to the event itself.

The father of two sons does not want to conceal another significant personal advantage of his work at Zollverein: He lives with his family where he also grew up and always returned from his travels: In Essen-Stoppenberg, just a stone's throw away from the World Heritage Site, the Grand Hall and "his soccer field".

She prefers to turn the really big wheels: event specialist feels at home in special industrial settings

The more complicated, the better: When orders like the one from LEGO land on her desk, Kerstin Vollmert is in her element. In October, the Grand Hall is to be transformed into a fantastic world of games for six days. What is the job of the experienced event specialist? Will she make sure that every single brick finds its place?

"No," she says, amused. "I couldn't do that either." She's never had much to do with LEGO building sets as the mother of a grown daughter. Her job lies with other things, especially as, like now at the LEGO event, innovative experiential areas are in focus, from interactive LED flooring to trampolining to dance choreography.

Material quantities

For an event on 4,000 square meters to be so playful, the preparation must be right down to the last detail. The schedule plays an important role here. "We have some logistical challenges here," explains Kerstin Vollmert. Assisting service providers have to be coordinated among themselves and an interim storage facility has to be made available for the quantities of material. The stage builders are also particularly in demand. Because children in particular are supposed to have fun on the event days, accompanying adults take their seats on a grandstand specially installed in the Grand Hall. From there, parents & co. can't join in the fun, but they can join in the excitement.

Unusual workplace is inspiration

"We make sure that everything in the hall is just as the customer wants it," says the Witten native, who headed the events department at the Colosseum in Essen for many years before moving to the Grand Hall. What she particularly likes about her workplace at Zollverein is that she is once again dealing with a magnificent industrial backdrop. And can turn really big wheels in the form of complex orders. Companies and corporations bring very different demands. "The goal is for our customers to walk out of here happy and say: this is exactly how we imagined it."

When the LEGO show starts on 07.10.23 in the Grand Hall, Kerstin Vollmert won't have much time to try her hand at the famous bricks herself. As a direct contact person for all questions that arise around the event, she always has to be ready. She creates free space for herself outside the hot phases. Then she sometimes goes to the movies. With her daughter, for example, who also works in the event industry while studying to be a teacher. The last movie they saw was, how could it be otherwise, "Barbie.

Rarely seen at his desk: Daniel Kölle, the technical manager of the Grand Hall.

Daniel Kölle, our technical manager, had light bulbs sent to him from all over and tested them. They had to meet three specific requirements: Fit into the sockets of the original wall lanterns from 1961 (!) in the Grand Hall, be energy-saving, and give off an atmosphere like in the old industrial days. A small light bulb, even if it's a needle in a haystack, doesn't upset anyone who has been responsible for the event infrastructure for world stars like Robbie Williams or AC/DC.

The native of Paderborn, for friends and colleagues simply "Kölle", comes to over 30 years of professional experience in the event industry. Among other things, as a stage builder, stage manager, fire protection officer and safety expert.

Working on the weekend? Perfectly fine.

He feels at home in the Grand Hall because here he can demonstrate all his skills in one place. This starts with initial discussions with corporate customers when it comes to space planning and extends to the implementation of sustainability measures. He is often on duty at weekends as well. Perfectly okay for the 57-year-old. "That way I also have time off during the week," says the father of three, who in his private life makes music with his band Pottgod (recently named "the best band in the West" by WDR2) or works in the allotment garden. "An office job, Monday to Friday, Nine to Five, no, that wouldn't be for me." Sitting at a desk for long periods of time is not something you'll find him doing anyway.

Successful search

If you want to talk to him, it's best to look first in the hall, on the grounds or in the adjacent switch house - where he is monitoring preparations for the next event or even the modernization work that is currently underway. Which brings us back to the light bulb. Of course, the all-rounder has found the right LEDs - at a company in Rhineland-Palatinate. The light sources fit in wonderfully - and also save 75% energy.

Our lucky charm for almost 30 years

Light is a big topic in our technical conversion. We change all the lamps, install a completely new lighting system - but we always stay true to one lamp.

Namely the one that stands in the foyer of our administration. Sven Robusch and Tom Koperek, the current managing directors of the Grand Hall and Blue Wheels, saved the historic spotlight. When they were on the road together as lighting technicians with various touring productions through Germany in the 1980-ies, they discovered the old treasure that was about to be scrapped.

Who knows about historic theater lighting?

"Since the founding of our company, it has stood in changing locations as a lucky charm in the foyer," says Tom Koperek, "and indeed it has not left us now for almost 30 years, the luck." By the way, in this context, we would really appreciate if someone has a hint for us from which year the spotlight could originally come from... We'll just take a guess: 30s?

Conversion makes events in the Grand Hall as energy-efficient as possible

The Grand Hall was launched seven years ago and has long since made a name for itself as the event location for high-class events in the Ruhr region and beyond. The renovation of the former industrial hall at Zollverein in 2016 cost 10 million euros, and now managing director Tom Koperek is once again putting up a considerable sum of money - this summer, the technology and lighting will be brought up to the very latest standards and the former switchgear house belonging to the Grand Hall will be given a fresh makeover.

"We want to make the Grand Hall as energy-efficient as possible," Koperek says. For the measures, which will take several weeks, he has brought in the technology service provider Blue Wheels. Among other things, it will switch completely to LED lights. "A lot has happened in this area recently," adds Florian Kohn, managing director at Blue Wheels. "Atmosphere can now also be created excellently with LED." Not only on the stage, but also throughout the entire hall. For example, with special lighting effects that can be dimmed to any level or create colored waves.

Kilometers of cable for the best sound

But things really get complicated in the Grand Hall when a total of 15 kilometers of cable are laid for the new loudspeakers. Along the hall ceiling at a height of 8 meters. "We are installing the 40 speakers of various sizes in a decentralized manner," explains Kohn. "This will allow us to further improve speech intelligibility, for example for conferences and congresses." The technology specialists are guided by a complicated concept based on an acoustic simulation: To achieve the optimum sound, the team tried out every possible constellation beforehand.

Charging columns in front of the Grand Hall

The first big company event after the vacations is scheduled for mid-August, and everything has to be ready by then. "We're working flat out," says Tom Koperek, who is pleased that the modernization will save up to 75% in energy costs. "For our customers, that means being able to hold events even more sustainably and economically - without sacrificing quality." And then to really round things off, Koperek is also providing an e-charging infrastructure. As of soon, 10 fast-charging columns will be available in front of the Grand Hall.

"It's often easier to just talk in person" - For Mareike Kuntke, direct exchange is what makes for success

Sounds cool, but what is it actually, a one stop event location? We ask someone who should know: Mareike Kuntke is Head of Sales and responsible for event sales at Grand Hall ZOLLVEREIN.

Their customers are companies that love the special (the Grand Hall on the UNESCO World Heritage Site) on the one hand and comfort (all event-related services as part of a full-service model) on the other.

Sometimes it happens that companies and corporations planning a congress, a workshop or a celebration hire event agencies. Then the agency is also the first point of contact for the Grand Hall team. That's why "communicating in the shortest possible way" is one of the central tasks of the state-certified business administrator for the hotel and catering industry. "A lot of things are done by e-mail, but it's often easier to make a quick phone call or sit down together for more complex coordination." Just once? "Yes, it's faster and a lot more personal, especially, of course, if you already know each other from previous projects and the division of tasks is clear."

Permanent partners - from catering to technology

Just as often the case: The customer wants the organization of his event to be handled completely by the Grand Hall. Then Mareike Kuntke addresses the fixed partners from technology, catering, furnishings and equipment: "We've been working closely together since the old industrial hall was converted into the Grand Hall." So: if it goes hand in hand, despite a lot of work a lot of fun, then it must be a one stop event location.

The serenity already brought along: Event manager develops ideas together with the customers

There she sits, relaxed, answering all the questions. Even though she has only just completed an evening event, the next congress is already just around the corner and preparations for it are in full swing. Nevertheless, Margareta Ferreira takes the time to talk about her job, which for her is first and foremost a vocation. The 45-year-old has been part of the Grand Hall ZOLLVEREIN team since 2019. Here she is responsible for sales.

Margareta Ferreira has already brought her composure with her; after training as a hotel manager, she completed a teaching degree. Only to return to the hospitality industry. Today, she is mainly involved in "planning, organizing and communicating to all sides" at the Grand Hall. "I deal closely with customers and suppliers, I can't imagine a more diverse job." She regularly sits down with the Grand Hall's partner companies - including technicians, stage builders, room designers and caterers.

Everyone is present at the trade meetings

At such "trade meetings," projects are discussed and ideas are fleshed out. "It is important that decision-makers in companies are also on site with us. They want and need to get a picture of how we work and what is possible in the Grand Hall." Often, customers have a vague idea about their event, "but that's about it." The sales team then provides support, presents setups, suggests presenters and live acts, creates mood boards for furniture and decor, and reports on their experiences.

In these situations, the event manager is in her element, just like during the event itself. With one difference: "If everything is well planned, an event runs all by itself," says Ferreira. And if it doesn't? She reflects briefly, "Then we probably did something wrong." She can't recall such a case. "Sure, there are questions in between, but we quickly find a solution together."
